Car thieves in the Twin Cities aren't just breaking windows and peeling steering columns anymore. Minneapolis police have been recovering key programmers and diagnostic scanners from suspects, and thefts of vehicles taken without the keys are climbing fast. Here's how modern keyless theft actually works, why your factory alarm doesn't stop it, and what we install at our Minneapolis shop to shut it down.

The Theft Problem Changed
For a couple years the story was Kia and Hyundai. Those are still being stolen, but MPD data from early 2026 showed something bigger: thefts of other brands taken without a key jumped from 312 to 497 compared to the same stretch of 2025. Police specifically called out key programming technology showing up in Minneapolis, and local reporting pointed to performance trims like Dodge, Jeep and Chrysler SRT models as targets.
Translation: the thieves going after nicer, newer vehicles are using electronics, not screwdrivers. And the electronics are cheap and easy to get.
How Thieves Steal Cars Without Keys
There are three main methods we see discussed and documented right now. None of them require the thief to have your key fob in hand.
1. OBD Key Programming
The thief gets inside the vehicle, plugs a programming tool into the OBD-II diagnostic port under the dash, and teaches the car a brand new key. The car now thinks the thief's blank fob is legitimate. Start, shift, drive away. This is the method MPD says is spreading in the city.
2. Relay Attacks
Two people with radio relay devices. One stands near your house picking up your proximity key's signal, the other stands next to your car and rebroadcasts it. The car thinks the key is right there and unlocks and starts. Works on a lot of push-button start vehicles while the fob sits on your kitchen counter.
3. CAN Injection
The newest and nastiest. Security researcher Ken Tindell documented a case where a nearly new Toyota RAV4 was stolen by pulling back the front bumper liner and tapping into the headlight wiring, which sits on the vehicle's CAN bus network. A device injected fake messages that told the car a valid key was present. Some of these tools were reportedly disguised as ordinary Bluetooth speakers. No key, no relay, no OBD port needed.
Why your factory alarm doesn't help
Every one of these attacks works by convincing the car that the thief is you. Your factory system isn't being defeated, it's being lied to. Once the car believes a valid key is present, the immobilizer releases and the alarm stays quiet. A louder siren doesn't fix that. You need something the thief's tools can't talk to.
What Actually Stops It
The fix is a second layer of authorization that lives outside the factory key system. That's exactly what the IGLA anti-theft system does, and it's why we've become one of the busiest IGLA installers in Minnesota.
How IGLA works
- PIN code using your factory buttons. Before the engine will start or the transmission will shift, you enter a short code using buttons already in your car, like steering wheel controls or window switches. Nobody watching knows a code was entered.
- Optional smartphone or tag authorization. Prefer not to enter a code every time? IGLA can authorize through your phone or a small Bluetooth tag you carry.
- No wire cutting. IGLA communicates digitally over the vehicle's CAN and LIN networks. There's no traditional cut-relay hacked into your factory harness.
- No visible module. It's tiny and hidden. There's no blinking LED or brand sticker telling a thief what to look for.
- Anti-carjacking mode. Optional feature that shuts the engine down after the vehicle travels a short distance if authorization isn't confirmed.
- OBD port protection. Optional add-on that blocks unauthorized diagnostic connections, which directly targets the key-programming method above.
- Service mode. Taking the car to a dealer or mechanic? Service mode lets them work on it without you handing over a code.
A thief can program a new key, relay your fob, or inject CAN messages, and the car still won't start or shift without the IGLA authorization. Their tools are built to fool the factory system. IGLA isn't the factory system.

Free Things You Should Do Today
Hardware is the real fix, but these habits close easy doors in the meantime.
- Don't leave it running unattended. MPD lists vehicles left running and keys left inside as ongoing theft causes. With a remote start, the car stays locked while it warms up.
- Store proximity fobs away from doors and windows, or in a signal-blocking pouch, to make relay attacks harder.
- Park in a garage when you can, and in well-lit areas when you can't.
- Check your manufacturer's app for any available security or key-related software updates.
Steering wheel locks and visible deterrents can slow a thief down, but they don't stop the vehicle from starting. If someone has already decided your car is the one, the only thing that matters is whether it will start and move. That's the problem IGLA solves.
