A star headliner is one of those modifications that stops people in their tracks. Open the door, look up, and instead of flat gray fabric there's a field of fiber optic lights mimicking a night sky across the entire ceiling of your vehicle. It's one of the most dramatic interior upgrades available — and it's something we build at Saint Nordic Custom Autoworks in Spring Lake Park, MN.
What Is a Star Headliner?
A star headliner replaces your factory headliner fabric with a custom panel embedded with hundreds of fiber optic strands that terminate at the ceiling surface as tiny points of light. Each strand is fed from an illuminator unit hidden in the headliner assembly — the strands themselves carry light, not electricity, which means the lights themselves produce no heat and draw very little power.
The result is a ceiling that looks like the night sky — hundreds of individual pinpoints of light that can be static, slowly twinkling, or in shooting star configurations that send brief streaks of light across the ceiling. The effect inside a dark cabin is genuinely stunning. This is the same type of system used in luxury vehicles like Rolls-Royce and Mercedes-Benz S-Class — we bring it to any vehicle.
How It's Built
The factory headliner is removed from the vehicle. Hundreds of individual fiber optic strands are hand-threaded through the headliner material at specific locations — the density and distribution of strands determines the final star pattern. The strands are trimmed flush with the surface, the illuminator unit is installed in a hidden location within the headliner assembly, and the headliner is reinstalled. When the illuminator is active, each strand end glows as a individual point of light.
What Controls It
The illuminator unit controls the brightness, color, and effect mode of the star field. Most systems allow you to adjust brightness, switch between static and twinkling effects, and where shooting stars are included, control the frequency and speed of the shooting star effect. Controls are typically integrated into the vehicle's interior in a clean, factory-looking location.
Options & Add-Ons
Star Count
The number of fiber optic strands determines the density of the star field. More strands creates a denser, more dramatic effect. At Saint Nordic we offer three configurations:
Shooting Stars
Shooting stars are an add-on effect where select fiber strands are connected to a secondary illuminator channel that pulses light through them in sequence, creating the appearance of a brief streak of light traveling across the ceiling. The effect is subtle and realistic — a genuine shooting star appearance rather than a blinking light. Shooting stars are available as an add-on to any star count configuration.
Sunroof Opening
Vehicles with sunroofs require the headliner to be fabricated around the sunroof opening. This is a standard part of the build process for applicable vehicles. Note: shooting stars are not available on vehicles with panoramic sunroofs — the panoramic sunroof configuration doesn't allow for the correct fiber routing for that effect.
Reupholstery
The headliner can be reupholstered in a custom material as part of the build — Alcantara, suede, or custom fabric in colors other than the factory finish. If you want the headliner to be black instead of gray, or finished in a premium material that matches a custom interior, we can build that into the job.
"From" pricing reflects base configuration. Final pricing depends on vehicle size, headliner complexity, add-ons selected, and any reupholstery requirements. Larger vehicles — full-size SUVs, Suburbans, Sprinter vans — have more headliner surface area and more labor involved. What Vehicles Can Get a Star Headliner?
Most vehicles with a fabric headliner can receive a star headliner installation. The ideal candidates are vehicles where the headliner can be fully removed and reinstalled cleanly — SUVs, trucks, sedans, and coupes with standard fabric headliners.
- SUVs and crossovers — ideal candidates, large ceiling surface creates a dramatic effect
- Full-size trucks — crew cab trucks work well, particularly with a darker headliner material
- Sedans and coupes — excellent result, especially vehicles with dark interiors
- Vans and Sprinters — large surface area, spectacular effect
- Panoramic sunroof vehicles — can be done, shooting star add-on not available
Some vehicles have overhead consoles, sunroof controls, ADAS sensors, or microphone arrays integrated into the headliner assembly. How Long Does It Take?
A star headliner installation is typically a multi-day job. The headliner removal, fiber threading, illuminator installation, and reinstallation process requires time to do correctly. Rushing fiber threading produces uneven star distribution — the density and pattern of the stars is determined by the care taken during that process. We'll give you a specific timeline for your vehicle when you book.
